Killer Whales

Welcome to Killer Whales Website

Killer whales are very striking animals. Although they are powerful predators, they do not attack humans, unlike many other predators such as tigers, lions, and polar bears. They only hunt and kill to eat.

Although killer whales are called whales, they are more closely related to dolphins. Killer whales are the largest members of the dolphin family. The common dolphins are closely related to killer whales.

Killer whales are found in all oceans of the world. Scientists call a killer whale an orca.

On this Killer Whales website, we discuss many aspects of life and behaviour of killer whales. We describe the life of killer whales from birth to learning to hunt and communicate to mating and breeding and finally to death. We discuss where killer whales live and the types of orcas killer whales.

Specifically, we also discuss the life of Namu, the first killer whale in captivity. We touch on the subject of Shamu, the pride and joy of Sea World, and Keiko, the star of Free Willy movies. Most people do not see killer whales in the wild. They watch them in marine life parks, where orcas are often the star performers. Scientists also study orcas in these parks. They have found that orcas learn quickly. Much about orcas remains a mystery. But as we learn more about orcas, we gain a better understanding of all wild animals.
