Shamu - the killer whale
Shamu is the name Sea World uses for its many killer whales. It is made to be an icon of Sea World's greatest stars, the killer whales. Sea World has a show called The Shamu show which is the most popular show at Sea World.
The name "Shamu" is actually a stage name shared by many adult killer whales at Sea World. The original Shamu was a female killer whale taken into captivity in October 1965 in Puget Sound and lived at Sea World of California for 6 years, before dying of septicaemia on August 23, 1971.
The first Baby Shamu was called Kalina, born on September 26, 1985. Kalina, was the first-ever baby killer whale to thrive in captivity.
The first grandbaby killer whale Shamu was a male killer whale known as Keet. Keet was born in February, 1993.
The first great grandbaby killer whale Shamu is a female killer whale called Kalia. Kalia was born in late December 2004. A fourth generation of killer whales is expected in 2006.
Sea World San Diego
One of San Diego's most famous attractions is Sea World. Sea World is the home of Shamu, the three-ton killer whale and his friends Baby Shamu, Namu and Nakina. They perform in the five million gallon Shamu Stadium, leaping as high as twenty-four feet out of the water and thoroughly soaking the public in the front rows with their acrobatic antics!
